Steven A. Kunsman Hitachi Energy Grid Automation Director Product Management and Applications Steve leads the technical team within North America for the industrial and utility segments. He is a recognized Substation Automation and Electric Energy Operation Technology Cybersecurity Specialist with over 38 years in substation automation, protection and control applications, communications technologies, cybersecurity for substations, and the Relion product family of protection and control relays. Steve’s career began in 1984 as an Electrical Designer for the Brown Boveri Corporation protective relay group. He has held various engineering, technology and product management positions within the Hitachi Energy’s (formerly ABB Power Grids) North American and global substation automation organizations. Steve holds 6 patents related to protection, control and automation applications and has published over 30 industry articles and papers on Digital Substation, Substation Automation & Communications, Protection and Substation Cybersecurity. He is an IEEE PES senior member where his industry activities include: - IEEE PES Power System Communications and Cybersecurity (PSCC) committee - IEEE PES Power System Relaying and Control (PSRC) committee - Supported US Department of Energy‘s Securing Energy Infrastructure Exective Task Force as Senior Technical Advisor and Co-chair Evaluating Technology and Standards Technical Project Team - ISA99 Working Group 5 member and co-chair of Working Group 14 developing the Reference Architecture and Application Profiles mapping to IEC 62443 standard series - UCA International Users Group Executive Committee as co-chairperson since the organization’s founding - Past IEC TC57 US delegate and was an active member in the development of the IEC61850 Ed 1 communications standard Steve holds a B.S. in Electrical Engineering from the Lafayette College and an MBA with a concentration in Management of Technology from Lehigh University.
