Profile
Hugo Castaneda is the Director of Engineering, Smart Grid - REACTS at ComEd. In his role, Hugo is responsible for the Renewable Energy Advanced Control Telemetry Systems (REACTS) department and the strategic engineering and build out of Fiber and PLTE communication infrastructure, which brings out the full potential and value our electrical grid. In addition, Hugo is responsible for leading engineering initiatives that drive grid modernization, technology integration, and operational excellence across ComEd’s Smart Grid programs. This includes overseeing the design and deployment of advanced grid technologies such as microgrids, DER integration & advanced control research.
Professional History
Hugo Castaneda is a results-driven leader focused on improving processes, technology, and personnel with a commitment to integrity, safety, diversity, and empowerment. He started at Boeing, working in design, field testing, reliability analysis, and airframe modifications management. In 2011, he joined ComEd, taking on roles in Transmission & Substation Equipment Engineering, Asset Management, Distribution Automation, and Engineering. Hugo has led key initiatives at ComEd and across Exelon, including developing maintenance strategies, operational technology security governance, new technical workforce programs, and implementing technologies to improve the electrical grid's performance.
Civic Involvement
Hugo Castaneda has been actively engaged in various civic and community initiatives, demonstrating a strong commitment to community & inclusion. Hugo's community involvement includes mentoring programs, such as the ComEd Scholars program, where he mentors and guides students and young professionals. In addition, he is committed to giving back to the community, and he serves as a mentor to youth within the Chicagoland area. He has worked with inner city youth and has reached out to positively influence stressed communities.
Education
Hugo holds a Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Washington University in St. Louis and a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Illinois at Chicago (May 2003). He is a Licensed Professional Engineer in the State of Illinois.
