In the last decade at Duke Energy's Emerging Technology Office, David Lawrence has concentrated on DC Microgrids and Cybersecurity, contributing to key developments like the EMerge Alliance initiated ANSI C12.32 DC Metering standard and the NAESB Open Field Message Bus (OpenFMB) standard. Throughout his career, he has shared his insights across numerous speaking engagements, advocating for the advancement and adoption of interoperable, distributed, autonomous, and zero-trust (ZTAG - Zero Trust Applications for the Grid) systems.

Lawrence began his more than four-decade career at Westinghouse, focusing on embedded systems within metering technologies and test equipment, setting the stage for his expertise in smart grid innovations. His tenure with ABB metering, transformers, and MV switchgear coupled with his international experience through ABB’s Zurich headquarters, expanded his role into global IT and engineering management, where he led significant projects, including the deployment of a global Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) system. A native of Portsmouth, VA, Lawrence earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and has been awarded six US Patents.
