Principal Engineer, SOUTHERN COMPANY

Dr. Clifton Black is a Principal Engineer in the Power Delivery group within Southern Company’s Research and Development organization, with more than 20 years of experience in the electric utility sector. He leads a comprehensive R&D program focused on grid operations, planning, advanced analytics, visualization, and cyber-physical security, supporting Southern Company’s regulated electric operating subsidiaries. He also leads Southern Company’s synchrophasor program across both transmission and distribution systems and manages industry-wide collaborations with utilities, national laboratories, vendors, and academic partners.

Dr. Black is the founder and director of the Grid Visualization and Analytics Center (SGVAC), a secure environment for the pre-operational development, evaluation, and demonstration of emerging transmission and distribution technologies. He joined Southern Company in 2006 and holds B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees in Electrical Engineering from The University of Alabama.
