Chad Carsten
I’m an operations technology and grid modernization leader with 20+ years of experience across the electric utility and military environments—grounded in hands-on field and systems expertise and progressed into enterprise leadership roles.
My background began as an electrical craftsman and technician working with power plants, SCADA, EMS, and advanced metering systems. That foundation shapes how I lead today: with a deep respect for field operations, system reliability, and practical execution. I currently serve as Director of Operations Technology at Evergy, leading enterprise OT initiatives spanning grid automation, digital field systems, GIS platforms, asset management, unmanned systems, and operational analytics across multi-state utility operations.
Throughout my career, I’ve been trusted to step into complex, high-impact initiatives—accelerating stalled programs, delivering large-scale technology deployments, and building high-performing teams. This includes leading the successful completion of a 710,000-meter AMI deployment, establishing enterprise analytics and automation capabilities, and delivering critical MDM and field system upgrades on time and on budget.
My experience spans smart grid, SCADA, AMI, MDM, ADMS, secure communications (900 MHz, private LTE), AI-enabled operations, and NERC-CIP regulated environments. I focus on translating emerging technology into reliable, scalable capabilities that improve safety, resiliency, and operational performance.
In addition to my executive role, I serve on nonprofit and community boards and recently retired from the U.S. Air Force / Air National Guard after 20 years of service. I also periodically engage in advisory and consulting conversations—supporting organizations as they navigate grid modernization, operations technology strategy, and complex system transformations.
