Andrew West has 40 years' experience as a SCADA software engineer. He spent 10 years with a generation and transmission utility, working on SCADA master station software, configuration and display management before switching to embedded firmware for substation communication and control devices. Since the mid-2000's he has become progressively more involved with cybersecurity for control systems. Since 1995 he has been involved with the creation of Australian, IEC and IEEE standards for SCADA and substation automation. He is currently a member of the working group responsible for IEC 61850, spokesperson for the committee responsible for the IEC 60870-5 family of SCADA protocols and Chairs the DNP Technical Committee. He provides thought leadership, consulting and training in DNP3, the IEC 60870 and IEC 61850 standards and cyber-security practices for critical infrastructure control systems, with the goal of people and systems working together.
