Scaling Outage Coordination Without Scaling Headcount: Dominion Energy’s Move to Automated Transmission Outage Planning
Dominion Energy plans to grow Virginia's transmission capacity by roughly 100% over the next decade, investing on the order of $2 billion a year, and nearly every one of those projects needs a planned outage to build. That collides with a hard reality: the power-flow studies that clear an outage as reliable were done largely by hand, point-and-click, so reliability engineers often couldn't begin analyzing a May 1 outage until about a month before it. And when project pipelines, weather, or supply-chain shifts forced a reschedule (as they constantly do) the rework rippled outward into costly project churn.
This session shows how Dominion's Electric Transmission reliability team, with engineering partner Simple Thread, built ANODE, an analytics platform that automates the tedious study work and lets a ten-person team plan and de-conflict outages up to three years in advance. Engineers run automated peer checks, N-1-1 cascading-failure analysis, and solar-output scenarios; the platform flags reliability risks the moment an outage is requested, surfaces optimal scheduling windows, and pushes outage-impact insight out to system-operations and key-accounts teams. The payoff is a more proactive posture: dramatically less scheduling churn, far greater analytic throughput without adding headcount, and a firmer grip on reliability-penalty exposure, which can run from $1 million to well over $10 million per significant event as the grid scales fast.
