SCADA 201: Advanced Applications, Integration & Cybersecurity – Part 2
Ready to build on your SCADA fundamentals?
This course takes the next step by exploring how SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system information, functionality, and secure networks are used to support advanced electric utility applications. Building on the concepts introduced in SCADA 101: Understanding the Foundation of Utility Automation – Part 1, participants will learn how SCADA data is integrated with other systems and technologies to improve distribution operations, reliability, and grid management.
The course provides an introduction to Distribution Automation (DA) and Advanced Distribution Management Systems (ADMS), including their role in the smart grid and how they integrate with distributed energy resources such as solar PV and energy storage, power electronics, and microgrids. Participants will also explore the growing convergence of IT and operational technology (OT), as well as how new data sources—including unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and robots—are being incorporated into utility operations.
A key focus of the course is cybersecurity. Participants will learn fundamental security concepts, network architecture, security tools, relevant standards and guides, and best practices for protecting increasingly connected utility systems. Real-world examples and implementation challenges will help participants understand how established SCADA practices can be adapted to support more complex applications while maintaining system security and reliability.

Attendees Will:
- Explain the role of Distribution Automation (DA) and Advanced Distribution Management Systems (ADMS) in modern electric utility operations and the smart grid.
- Describe how SCADA systems integrate with distributed energy resources, including solar PV and energy storage, as well as microgrids and other advanced technologies.
- Identify how IT/OT convergence and emerging data sources, including UAVs and robots, are changing utility operations and SCADA applications.
- Recognize key system design, implementation, integration, and operational considerations for advanced SCADA applications.
- Apply fundamental cybersecurity concepts, tools, standards, and best practices to help secure SCADA and other connected utility systems. By the end of the course, participants will have a stronger understanding of how SCADA serves as a foundation for advanced distribution applications and how utilities can integrate emerging technologies while maintaining reliable, secure operations.
The course is designed for participants who have completed the SCADA Fundamentals course or have a basic understanding of SCADA.
Attendees will be encouraged to bring questions and share experiences as presenters facilitate discussion around the practical challenges of integrating traditional utility control systems with newer, more complex technologies.
