Preparing for a More Dynamic Distribution Grid: How Electromagnetic Transient (EMT) Analysis Is Changing the Study Landscape
As distribution systems evolve with increasing penetration of inverter-based distributed energy resources (DERs), the grid is becoming more dynamic and complex. Many of the emerging challenges—such as transient overvoltage, rapid voltage changes, weak-grid interactions, and protection behavior—occur on faster timescales and are often not captured by traditional phasor-domain studies.
To address these challenges, utilities are beginning to incorporate electromagnetic transient (EMT) analysis into their study practices. While EMT provides deeper insight into fast system dynamics, it also introduces new questions: When is this level of detail necessary? How should it be applied alongside existing planning tools? And how can utilities adopt these methods in a practical and scalable way?
This session will bring together utility engineers and industry experts to share real-world experience using EMT in distribution and microgrid applications. Rather than focusing on a single workflow, the discussion will explore the broader evolution of study practices—including how utilities are combining phasor and EMT methods, identifying situations where advanced analysis adds value, and addressing challenges such as model availability, data limitations, and coordination with equipment manufacturers.
