As VPPs move from pilot programs to widespread grid resources, custom one-off integration between thousands of aggregators and utilities is becoming too costly, too slow, and too complex to scale. Distribution utilities need practical ways to see, coordinate, and trust the DER flexibility behind VPPs. That starts with two critical enablers: proactive visibility into the service-oriented capabilities of existing DERs, and “plug-and-play” utility-to-aggregator integration for VPPs actively seeking to provide grid services.

This interactive EPRI-hosted panel will explore how leading utilities are moving VPP integration from concept to action. Panelists will share the next steps they are taking to actively monitor and coordinate DERs delivering bulk system services, as envisioned by FERC Order No. 2222, and to integrate DER-provided distribution services into everyday planning and operations.

The discussion will draw on EPRI’s FLEXIT initiative, a collaboration involving 25+ leading utilities representing more than 55% of U.S. electric meters and 40+ technology providers. Utility leaders from APS, LADWP, SMUD and Xcel Energy will share how FLEXIT advances are shaping a practical, industry-scale blueprint for real-world implementation in their service territories. Topics will include universal DER visibility interfaces, common utility-to-aggregator coordination functions, data exchange requirements mapped to IEEE 2030.5 and OpenADR, and harmonized distribution service definitions.

Attendees will gain utility-tested perspectives on how to move beyond fragmented DER integration toward scalable, VPP-enabled grid flexibility—while maintaining reliability, safety, cybersecurity, and operational confidence. They will also leave with a clearer understanding of the technical and organizational building blocks needed to support widespread utility-aggregator coordination.
