Grid Modernization

Power Distribution systems are evolving rapidly as electrification, data‑center growth, and widespread DER adoption reshape both the scale, temporal and locational patterns of demand. Traditional distribution planning processes which were built for more predictable loads and centralized resources are no longer sufficient. Utilities and regulators are now rethinking how Integrated Distribution System Planning (IDSP) and Integrated Resource Planning (IRP) must evolve and work together to ensure capacity, reliability, and affordability across an increasingly dynamic grid.

This panel will explore how planners can incorporate DER‑integrated forecasting, locational hosting considerations, smart metering and automation to modernize planning methods and optimize distribution investments. Discussion will highlight emerging solutions such as flexible demand programs, DER portfolios, non‑wires alternatives, grid‑enhancing technologies (GET) like power flow control, and operational innovations like feeder automation that can accelerate capacity delivery and defer expensive upgrades.

Attendees will gain practical insights into IDSP workflows, evaluating DER and GET options alongside traditional wires investments, and adopting modern analytical and operational tools to build a more flexible, resilient, and cost‑effective distribution system.
