GU302: Data that Matters: Driving Strategic Decisions in Asset Management

Utilities are sitting on more asset data than ever — yet most organizations still manage their infrastructure reactively, responding to failures rather than preventing them. This hands-on, half-day course bridges the gap between data collection and operational decision-making by giving participants a practical, end-to-end framework for building — or maturing — a proactive asset management program.

Drawing on real-world case studies from investor-owned, public power, and municipal utilities, the course walks participants through four integrated stages: establishing a business case culture, building condition-based and risk-based maintenance strategies, developing Asset Health Indexes (AHIs) for key equipment classes, and aligning leadership and O&M teams around a shared decision-making architecture.

Participants will learn why most asset management programs stall — and what separates the ones that succeed. A defining theme throughout: data is not the starting point, decisions are. Attendees will leave with a practical roadmap, templated frameworks, and the organizational playbook needed to move from reactive chaos to proactive excellence — regardless of where their utility currently stands on the maturity curve.
