Grid-Forming Inverters: From Proven Microgrid Applications to Emerging Grid-Connected Use Cases
As inverter-based resources continue to replace conventional generation, utilities are exploring how advanced inverter controls can support system stability, power quality, and resilience. Grid-forming (GFM) inverters have already demonstrated value in microgrid applications. Building on this foundation, the industry is now asking a broader question: can these capabilities be extended to grid-connected (“blue-sky”) operation?
This question is gaining urgency as utilities face increasing DER penetration, declining system strength, and emerging dynamic power quality challenges. While GFM is widely viewed as a potential solution, its role in distribution grid-connected operation remains new, evolving, and not yet fully understood.
This session will bring together utilities, system operators, and industry experts to share real-world perspectives and insights on GFM applications in both microgrid and grid-connected conditions. In addition to distribution utility experience, perspectives on deployment drivers and operational considerations at the bulk power system level will be shared—helping bridge understanding between transmission and distribution use cases.
Panelists will discuss key drivers, emerging use cases, and practical considerations of GFM inverters, including system stability, power quality improvement, and control coordination. Field experiences and study results will be presented to illustrate both the potential benefits and the open challenges associated with GFM adoption across transmission and distribution systems.
