Communication Networks

ComEd has invested in advanced communications infrastructure to support clean energy and grid modernization objectives, delivering a high-speed, high-bandwidth, secure, redundant, and resilient network to enable a wide range of use cases. The initial deployment focused on fiber optic communications to support both backbone and distribution networks.

As ComEd continues to evolve its communications strategy, wireless technology such as LTE/5G presents an opportunity to address some of the challenges associated with fiber deployment. Evaluating Private LTE (pLTE) has proven valuable, offering capabilities that support many existing fiber-based use cases while also enabling additional applications not previously identified.

This session will highlight the next phase of ComEd’s journey following its initial deployment of four pLTE sites. Topics will include first-time device cutovers, key business drivers, lessons learned, and overall program strategy. In addition, the considerations and processes involved in tower site selection, initial device deployment, core network design, and project and program management planning will also be presented.
