Beyond Coverage: The Value, Risks, and Evolution of Direct-to-Device Satellite Connectivity for Utility Operations
Direct-to-device (D2D) satellite communications are rapidly evolving from an emergency communications capability into a potential extension of utility operational technology (OT) and workforce connectivity strategies. Recent advances in satellite-enabled cellular standards and low Earth orbit (LEO) constellations are creating new opportunities to connect field personnel, distribution automation assets, and other remote endpoints without relying exclusively on terrestrial networks. How are these new capabilities helping utilities today and where is this technology falling short?
This presentation examines the emerging role of D2D satellite connectivity across utility use cases including distribution automation, workforce and utility resilience communications. Attendees will gain a practical understanding of where D2D technologies can deliver operational value today, where technical and business limitations remain, and how evolving standards and ecosystem partnerships are shaping future deployment models. Throughout this discussion, an Ameren technology leader will provide his experience with D2D services, offering practical insight and findings that either underscore benefits or create more questions about this technology.
This session will explore performance and capacity considerations, cybersecurity implications, spectrum and regulatory challenges, integration with private and public LTE/5G networks, and the impact on utility communications architectures.
