Advanced metering infrastructure was once defined by what it replaced: manual reads and estimated bills. AMI 2.0 represents something fundamentally different—a distributed sensing, communications, and intelligence platform that underpins a broader grid modernization strategy. In this session, National Grid, Rhode Island Energy, Landis+Gyr, and Sense will offer a candid, end-to-end look at one of the most ambitious AMI 2.0 deployments underway in the Northeast.

National Grid and Rhode Island Energy will share deployment progress and operational realities across New York, Massachusetts, and Rhode Island—now surpassing 2 million electric endpoints installed. This includes lessons learned about what it takes to support software at the edge and the new processes they’ve developed.

Both utilities will share how high-frequency meter data is already being leveraged to deliver a real-time experience to households, creating positive interactions between the utilities and those customers, and how appliance-level disaggregation is surfacing DER adoption trends before customers self-report them. The discussion  will also include honest reflections on where the data is already proving valuable to grid operations—and where the work of turning data into decisions is still underway. for load forecasting and network planning, as well as for  asset management and infrastructure investment decisions.

Landis+Gyr will provide context on the Revelo meter architecture and how the hardware was designed from the outset to support not just traditional AMI functions—interval data, outage detection, remote connect/disconnect—but software capable of continuous waveform capture  and edge processing capabilities to power a new ecosystem of edge apps, including Sense's load disaggregation and power anomaly detection solutions.

Presenters will also share what it takes to stand up a deployment of this scale across multiple regulatory environments, how the three-way partnership between utility, hardware vendor, and software platform is managed in practice, and where the hard problems still sit.
