One of our clients struggled with controlling construction paving costs. Although well versed in utility work, often field decisions were made without full understanding of downstream paving implications, leading to sub-optimized paving work that followed. While traditional computer-based training was attempted, it failed to resonate with a mobile, field-based workforce. Being forward thinking, PG&E partnered with Accenture to co-develop an innovative, immersive training program leveraging virtual reality.  Accenture worked side-by-side with PG&E subject matter experts—riding along in trucks and walking live construction sites—to design four VR training modules grounded in authentic jobsite conditions and region-specific rules. The result: a highly tailored, 360° learning experience delivered across 17 service centers and over 300 employees, featuring layered interactions, site-specific guidance and cost-saving techniques embedded in realistic scenarios.
The impact has been measurable and meaningful: 95% of participants rated the training 4+ out of 5 stars, 86% felt confident applying what they learned, and 84% would recommend it to peers. Beyond user satisfaction, the training strengthened cross-functional collaboration and laid the groundwork for expanded use cases, including safety and vegetation management. With its scalability, rapid deployment potential and generative AI-powered localization capabilities, this immersive learning model is poised to transform how utilities train their workforce—empowering safer decisions, reducing rework and lowering operational costs.
