Navigating the conversation around what everyone’s unique needs are can be complex, but it is more important than ever. It has already been proven that emphasizing your people, asking what their unique needs are, and striving to meet those needs within your Utilities workforce allows you to enhance innovation and problem-solving capabilities, better understand and meet the needs of a varied customer base, and ultimately address the evolving challenges of the energy sector – crucial aspects for managing a large complex Utilities program.

On the Eversource Energy smart metering program, we have been pioneering some novel approaches to having these difficult conversations by taking a grassroots approach and including vendors in the discussion. We have been able to set up a robust program-wide initiative facilitated by the program itself, as opposed to incorporating something prescribed by the Human Resources department, or having a program that only includes Eversource employees. This has allowed us to have stimulating conversations both within minority groups and as a larger group to educate ourselves on the challenges others face, and how we can achieve the highest standard of cross-team collaboration to get the best out of all our people every day. Eversource would like to share some of these concepts and lessons learned with other Utilities so they can optimize their workforce, and as a result, have higher performing transformation programs.
