Smart Cities , Communication Networks

Municipal utilities are uniquely positioned to lead the charge in smart city transformation—but only with the right communications and technology strategy in place. This session provides a deep dive into how municipal utilities can support smart city initiatives through a blend of Private networks (including private LTE (PLTE)), commercial networks, and edge technologies that enable scalable, secure, and community-focused innovation.

Attendees will learn how to evaluate communications infrastructure to support key smart city applications including smart metering, intelligent streetlighting, video surveillance (including mission critical public safety), distributed energy resource integration, and advanced data analytics. The session will also examine the tradeoffs between private and commercial network use, considerations for technology planning, and governance strategies that align with citywide innovation goals.

With insights from CPS Energy’s award-winning smart city efforts and collaboration through the SmartSA partnership, this session provides practical guidance on how municipal utilities can modernize operations, enhance customer service, and enable smarter, more sustainable communities.
