Power Quality Under Pressure: STATCOMs for Regenerative Loads with Weak Sources and Strict Voltage Compliance
STATCOM applications are now widespread, helping mitigate voltage deviation issues across a wide range of causes. For rapidly changing loads, the standard approach is fast open-loop control and netting out reactive power. This reduces the load to mostly real power, resulting in minimal voltage drop in typical systems. However, when addressing mitigation for loads that also regenerate, have a weak source, and a strict voltage excursion criterion, the standard approach fails. To meet the desired voltage excursion criteria for weak-source applications, special considerations, control algorithms, and equipment are essential.
