PG&E’s Fully Redundant Synchrophasor Architecture: Design, Implementation, and Grid Operations Integration
This session presents the design and operationalization of PG&E’s fully redundant synchrophasor data architecture, developed in collaboration with Quanta Technology. The presentation will detail the end-to-end deployment strategy, including standardized naming conventions, time-synchronized data collection, dual-path communications, and geographically redundant data archives leveraging AVEVA PI.
Attendees will gain insights into PG&E’s comprehensive approach to synchrophasor data management, including key performance indicator (KPI) dashboards for data availability and quality, advanced visualization tools for synchrophasor signal monitoring, and integration with real-time and historical analytics platforms. The presentation will also cover practical use cases such as NERC PRC-002 and PRC-028 compliance, RAS (Remedial Action Scheme) operation verification, and high-resolution system event analysis.
Lessons learned from system commissioning, architecture validation, and field deployment will be shared, along with PG&E’s plans for expanding synchrophasor integration into enterprise operations and future grid modernization initiatives.
Jointly presented by PG&E and Quanta Technology, this session offers a rare utility-vendor perspective on building resilient, high-value synchrophasor infrastructure at scale.
