BC Hydro was evaluating a large set of investments in Operating Technology to support the distribution side of their business. They realized that this was going to involve more than the control room. BC Hydro engaged in a cross-functional strategic planning initiative to define a long-term roadmap for its Distribution Grid Modernization efforts, ensuring future investments align with evolving operational and regulatory demands. Recognizing the fragmented nature of existing systems and organizational silos, BC Hydro broadened the scope beyond traditional IT and operations teams to include key stakeholders from Asset Planning, Control Room, Trouble Centre, Field Operations, and Customer.

This collaborative assessment identified pain points, aligned strategic objectives, and led to the design of an integrated architecture spanning SCADA, ADMS, OMS, Grid DERMS, Edge DERMS, GIS and related platforms. The result is a shared, multi-year roadmap that not only supports core modernization but also reinforces enterprise-wide coordination and data governance. This cross-business unit model provides a compelling approach for other utilities aiming to bridge technical transformation with organizational alignment.
