Utility strategies for distribution optimization as part of managed charging programs
As EV adoption increases, the challenge of integrating the charging load is increasingly focused on managing the impacts on the distribution system. A recent Department of Energy study focused on preparing the grid for EVs found that using rates and managed charging technologies could reduce distribution investments by 30% and indicated that the potential is even higher.
How utilities are addressing distribution challenges created by EV charging varies. As EV adoption increases, the higher levels of charging will impact different aspects of the distribution system. In this discussion, three leading utilities, Baltimore Gas & Electric (BGE), Southern Company, Xcel Energy, and PG&E, and a software vendor, WeaveGrid, will discuss different approaches to studying, demonstrating value, and taking programs to scale that proactively address distribution system challenges while delivering benefits to the grid and customers.
Participants will highlight results from the field and discuss the implications for utilities beginning to design their own managed charging programs focused on generating distribution system benefits.
