This session explores the challenges and potential solutions for increasing electricity demand and grid capacity. Traditionally, grid operators have expanded infrastructure to meet demand, but this approach is no longer sufficient due to investment shortfalls and rising congestion costs. In this informative talk, we will highlight the inefficiency of conservative grid ratings, which have led to underutilized capacity and increased congestion costs. Merely building more transmission capacity is not a viable long-term solution. Instead, innovative technologies such as GE Vernova's Digital Dynamic Line Rating (DDLR) software are crucial. This software, part of the GridOS portfolio, addresses capacity issues by providing real-time, accurate line ratings that consider real-world conditions, thereby enhancing operational safety and efficiency. Pacific Gas & Electric is an advocate of transformative software solutions to lead the energy industry forward and will dive into DDLR's ability to integrate with its existing systems and its role in reducing congestion and improving grid reliability.
