Grid Modernization

Many power utilities have installed a large number of remote terminal units since the early 1990s that are nearing the end of life or requiring an upgrade. This presents a challenge for utilities to come up with a replacement strategy, which often involves in-depth evaluation of upgraded hardware/software features that will significantly affect the RTU-based platform performance and product selection, such as implementing IEC 61850 in the network-based digital substation.

This presentation focuses on the RTU-based platform with the current installed base at Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) and presents its RTU replacement evaluation perspectives:

  1. System function perspective
  2. System application perspective
  3. Company financial / investment perspective
  4. Future system expansion perspective

This presentation also provides a summary of important technical features that should be considered in the RTU evaluation.
