Inside the ISO: Grid operator perspectives on the evolving grid
In the past decade, the power grid has undergone a significant transformation, evolving to a highly integrated and interconnected energy supply chain, from the source to the consumer end. The electron has also fundamentally shifted from one-way to bi-directional or multi-directional power flow which makes the grid increasingly complex and dynamic. To effectively navigate this modernized grid, we must equip it with the capability to make good judgments decisively, ultimately benefiting the entire energy ecosystem community.
This panel session will showcase insights from the industry experts representing ISO/RTO entities — California ISO, ERCOT, and IESO — offering diverse perspectives from different regions across North America. Key questions to be explored include the identification of challenges and obstacles stemming from the grid transformation. These may encompass the impacts of climate change and extreme weather, integration of intermittent renewables, aging infrastructure, fast-growing distributed energy resources, the rising number of EVs, and electrification, as well as concerns around physical and cyber security.
Speakers will explore the emergence of new opportunities amidst these challenges and assess the potential for overcoming obstacles through the adoption of innovative technologies. With panelists offering diverse viewpoints and experiences from various angles and regions, attendees can expect a comprehensive examination of the current state of the industry and insightful projections for its future trajectory.
