Distribution planners balance customer needs and grid reliability daily. Duke Energy’s digital tools help planners make decisions faster, especially when customers need to understand the capacity available when launching new projects, such as new construction, EV charging sites, and even crypto mining facilities. Duke Energy automates capacity planning analyses for the Carolinas using proprietary power flow algorithms.

This automation is a direct outcome of the multi-year strategic collaboration between Duke Energy and AWS. Duke Energy is already running millions of capacity planning scenarios within hours on AWS. Hosting capacity analyses leverage cleaned /pre-scrubbed grid model data, which is refreshed weekly. Automation is used for the post-processing of results for easy visualization.

In this session, panelists will dive into the specifics of running hosting capacity analyses at Duke's scale, including all data related challenges faced and overcome along the way.
