Challenges and lessons learned for scaling charging programs with Baltimore Gas and Electric and Arizona Public Service
As electric vehicles reach mass-market adoption, the industry is at a critical point of addressing the current barriers and challenges associated with managed charging and vehicle-grid integration (VGI). Even at low rates of adoption, electric vehicles (EVs) are impacting transformers and distribution systems, and as more people adopt EVs, it will become even more critical to get managed charging right. Join this panel of industry experts to hear more about the challenges utilities and software providers are experiencing in deploying and scaling managed charging programs and hear directly from Baltimore Gas and Electric and Arizona Public Service on the successes they have achieved in deploying managed charging programs with distribution- and bulk-level focuses. In this presentation, moderator Brittany Blair with the Smart Electric Power Alliance (SEPA) and speakers Mathias Bell with WeaveGrid, Nick Bengtson with Energyhub, and Stephanie Leach with Baltimore Gas and Electric, and Tony Perez with Arizona Public Service will discuss their ongoing work on managed charging, bidirectional charging, and how the industry can collaborate together to access the benefits of distribution level managed charging optimization and grid management. The presentation will include lessons learned, best practices, and recommendations for strategic planning, gathered from vehicle original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), utilities, technology providers, electric vehicle supply equipment manufacturers (EVSEs), and electric vehicle solution providers (EVSPs). The session will include references to SEPA's public report, "The State of Managed Charging in 2024," offering attendees a comprehensive view of the latest trends and practices in the field, and insights from an upcoming case study on Exelon's Smart Charge Management Program.
